FEELING OVERWHELMED?
Every writer feels overwhelmed at the start of a book. Successful writers take control by taking time to plan - and I'm not talking about making a creativity-sucking outline the way we were taught to do in sixth grade. I'm talking about looking at your project in a strategic way. I'm talking about knowing the answers to these critical questions.
Be honest - how many of these questions do you know the answer to?
- What are you hoping to gain by writing this book?
- What is your book really about?
- Who, exactly, is it for, and why should they care?
- What is the competition and how do you stack up against it?
- How will you reach your readers?
- What title/subhead will best catch their eye?
- How can you describe your book to close the pitch to agents/editors, or close the sale to readers?
- What is the narrative structure that best fits your material?
- What does your table of contents look like?
- How long will it take you to complete a rough draft?
- What help do you need along the way to achieve your goals?
