There are certain horses for certain courses. Just like you wouldn’t ask a pony to race in the Kentucky Derby, you should hire the right people for the job you need done today. If your sales team is 20 people, don’t worry about having someone who can scale to managing a sales team of 500. There’s a job that needs to get done today and that’s the most important matter at hand. By optimizing your hires for responsibility that’s too far in the future, you run the risk of not being able to get today’s job done. In weighing risks, the downside of over-hiring is much greater than the risk of having someone who is right today who can’t scale in the future. You’ll always be able to hire the right person in the future, but your business may not survive the wrong person today.
